Matthew P. Rooney
Matthew P. Rooney (PhD, University of Florida, 2021) is one of ten regional station archeologists working for the Arkansas Archeological Survey, a unit of the University of Arkansas System. He deploys archeological and historical research projects in southeast Arkansas and serves as the sole professor of anthropology at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Matthew specializes in community-based research, identifying and including descendants, local community members, and other important public stakeholders at each stage of the process. He has conducted research in Florida, Mississippi, and Arkansas primarily focusing on illuminating the past lives of oppressed peoples of American capitalism, including Indigenous southeasterners, enslaved African Americans, and migrating sharecroppers.
Dr. Rooney is currently the Vice President of Education for Preserve Arkansas, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Arkansas Historical Association, and the Newsletter Editor for the Southeastern Archaeological Conference.
